Refuse Utility Billing System Integration

Project Description

This municipal utility sanitation department collects refuse for approximately 600,000 residential dwelling units. The utility wished to leverage its City’s existing water utility billing system to add garbage services for its constituents. SDI provided options to separate garbage from existing utility bills or to integrate the services as a unified bill for all provided utilities (Water, Sewer and Garbage). The utility decided to integrate the billing and revenue collection for refuse services into the existing Customer Information System (CIS).

Solutions Delivered

SDI provided Advisory services to develop an approach to begin charging for refuse services. A 6-month plan was developed to fully integrate refuse services into the existing CIS. The SDI Team met with stakeholders to gather business and data requirements. The team was tasked with executing a project plan that defined activities to be accomplished within a challenging timeline. Processes, interfaces, and reports were developed and modified to support the initiative. Business analysis, system development, system integration and quality assurance were all performed and executed on-time and on-budget.

Project Results

The Refuse Integration Project was executed within the timeline requested and on budget. The expected recurring revenue stream is estimated to be $70 Million per year. This revenue will help off-set refuse collection and disposal costs.
