Can you tell us about your journey at SDI and how you became Vice President of Sales – Utilities?

When I was first hired as Vice President of Sales, my role was more regional, focusing on the West. However, following my first tenure at SDI, I had extensive experience working with Eastern utilities, allowing me to establish strong relationships in that region as well. As a result, it made sense for me to eventually take on a broader role overseeing utility sales across both the east and west when I returned to SDI.

How has the utilities sector evolved since you started in this industry?

When I first started, the industry was dominated by monopoly utilities that took the customers for granted. They did what they needed to do without being held accountable. However, now there are external pressures from regulators, shareholders, and customers that are forcing these utilities to invest more in customer service and regulatory compliance. Traditionally, these pressures haven’t been there, so utilities needed to up their game when it came to dealing with customers and regulators. Companies are now embracing modern systems— resulting in significant improvements to their operations. This has resulted in real changes in how these companies operate.

How do you see the future of the utilities sector? And what about technology’s impact on that future?

Technology is the driver for change. I saw a major shift five to ten years ago—it seemed impossible for utility companies to transition to the cloud. However, now it’s imperative to have real-time access and the ability to make prompt decisions to move in a positive direction. Technology will facilitate this and will continue to push that evolution, which is very exciting.

How do you stay up to date with industry trends and advancements?

I have a vast network and am actively and passionately involved with industry trade groups. I am a committee member and regularly participate in events organized by the American Gas Association (AGA) and committees of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) to stay informed about industry advancements and trends. Additionally, I attend smaller trade shows related to the water industry, where I can stay updated on what’s going on in that sector, too.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to become a hockey player—if not, then I wanted to become an engineer.

What’s the best professional advice you’ve been given?

Listen, I think that’s it. I mean, it resonates everywhere. Whether you want to advance your career, whether it’s sales or not, listening is a skill that some people don’t take to heart.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy spending my free time reading and being with my family. I’m a big family guy and take advantage of living in California by visiting wineries and going hiking. Even though my kids are in their 20s, they still like to spend time with the family. My wife and I recently traveled to Ireland, and we’re planning to visit more places in Europe as well as in the United States. Next week, we’re going to Central Valley, California, for a short road trip. I also enjoy listening to audiobooks, especially when I work out or travel and can’t use my computer. It helps pass the time and keeps me sharp.

What is one hobby or interest you have that people might be surprised to learn about?

I still play hockey, and I used to be in a league back in Chicago.

Football season starts in a couple of weeks. Who are you rooting for to get to the Super Bowl this year?

Bears, Bears, and always da Bears!
