SDI Presence Briefing: 2018 Cyber Security Chicago Conference

The SDI Team attended the Cyber Security Chicago conference at McCormick Place last month. The SDI Team – comprised of network engineers and security specialists – shares the following conference insights to assist you with the constantly-evolving task of strengthening your organization’s cybersecurity posture:

THE CLOCK IS TICKING…

There is a 1 in 4 chance that your environment will be compromised – so organizations need to think about the time it takes to detect and address affected device(s) and how quickly they can initiate a pre-established incident response process. The faster the breach can be identified and contained, the lower the overall costs.  Events such as these will only become more challenging as the frequency and severity of criminal and malicious attacks continue to increase.

YOUR PEOPLE ARE YOUR WEAKEST LINK.

With social engineering on the rise (due to better technology-based defenses) and increased focus on the C-suite, your organization’s employees present the biggest risk for a cyber breach. An organizational commitment to instilling a culture of cyber awareness must be a long-term investment –  just as other product controls that are put in place. Reduce the number of careless clicks via cyber training, and free up your IT team’s time for other critical cyber activities.

MANPOWER NEEDED!

68% of professionals surveyed in the US believe that there are too few cybersecurity workers in their department. Add the ever-increasing number of threats, their evolving sophistication, and multiple layers of cyber-related tech in your stack… and staying on top of timely cyber remediation activities can seem like an intimidating task. A well-prioritized cyber remediation plan – that factors in existing and future enterprise IT initiatives – is key to making progress.

SHOW SESSION STATS WORTH MENTIONING:
  • Avg global probability of a material breach in the next 24 months is 27.9%, an increase over last year’s 27.7%
  • Avg mean time to identify a breach: 197 days
  • The mean time to contain a breach: 69 days
  • Likelihood of a recurring material breach over the next two years: 27.9%
  • 80% of breaches involve credentials
  • Writing down passwords was cited as a problem by 55% of organizations in 2017, increasing to 65% in 2018.
  • Sharing passwords with colleagues was a problem for 46% of organizations in 2017, increasing to 54% in 2018.
