The Future of Energy: How Technology is Revolutionizing Utilities

The Future of Energy: How Technology is Revolutionizing Utilities

By Scott Grossart, Delivery Executive

Are you curious about the future of energy? Technology is revolutionizing the way utilities operate, making them more efficient, reliable, and sustainable. From smart grids and renewable energy sources to advanced analytics and AI, the possibilities are endless.

Smart Grids and Renewable Energy

One of the most significant trends in the energy industry is the growth of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal. As the cost of these technologies continues to decline, more utilities are adding them to their energy mix to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability. However, because most renewable energy is intermittently available, these sources usually  require a reliable storage solutions to ensure steady supply.

Enter smart grids.

Smart grids use advanced sensors, software, and analytics to manage the flow of energy, optimize usage, and reduce waste. Integrating renewable energy sources into the grid enables utilities to reliably deliver clean energy at a lower cost.

Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics

The use of advanced analytics and AI is also transforming the energy industry. Leveraging data from sensors, smart meters, and other sources gives utilities new insights into energy usage patterns, identify inefficiencies, and optimize their operations. AI-powered solutions can help utilities predict maintenance needs, reduce downtime, and improve customer service. Examples include:

  1. Expediting customer service responses by automatically fulfilling routine customer service requests (payment arrangements, service start-stops-move in/out, address changes, billing balance inquiries, energy assistance, service order inquiries, consumption inquiries)
  2. Generating regulatory compliance reports and automatically keeping them up -to- date when data changes.
  3. Eliminating errors and delays by automatically processing / optically reading hand-written and notes from field technicians.
  4. Transferring granular invoicing data/entering data into an invoice processing system.

The future of energy is exciting and challenging. The trends discussed offer a glimpse into the possibilities and opportunities that technology can bring to the energy industry.
