Challenge
A large metropolitan aviation authority responsible for one of the nation’s busiest airports manages a vast network of facilities and infrastructure assets. Hundreds of skilled trades and engineering staff rely on accurate asset data to support work orders, preventative maintenance schedules, and long-term planning.
However, asset information was inconsistent and lacked standardized governance. The organization needed a structured approach to improve asset data quality, establish clear ownership, and create consistent standards for how assets were identified, tagged, and maintained. Reliable asset data was essential to support informed decision-making and operational efficiency.
Solution
An Asset Data Governance (ADG) program was established to create a sustainable framework for managing asset information. A governance structure was formed with participation from multiple facilities and operational departments, defining clear roles, responsibilities, and decision-making authority.
Standards were developed through collaborative working sessions to ensure consistency in asset naming, tagging, and classification. A field-based strategy was designed to collect accurate asset data, including location information and photographs, while identifying assets that had not previously been recorded.
A comprehensive tagging strategy and process were created to standardize how assets would be labeled and maintained over time. Dedicated field teams were supported by quality assurance procedures to validate the accuracy and completeness of captured data. A reporting framework was also established to track progress, measure data quality, and support continuous improvement.
